CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

SouthWest Improvement Council, Program Director, 2007-Present

Since joining this small nonprofit, I have designed new marketing collaterals including Website, brochures and community posters.  Programs are grant funded and must meet budget and award objectives within defined timelines whether they are Federal, State or private financial awards.  Additionally, I respond to the day-to-day demands of community center operations including facility management, youth programs and new program development.

AARP Foundation, AARP ElderWatch Executive Director, 2001-2007

I led this project from the ‘blueprint’ vision of Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar to fruition. This included the establishment of a national consumer hotline and call center and analysis of financial elder abuse. I planned intervention strategies and developed training programs for law enforcement, financial institutions, legal providers and other front line professionals serving older adults.  Budget management, contract negotiation and web and data systems, developing brand and strategic communications were ongoing focal points.  I also regularly consulted with staff and colleagues nationally to share the Colorado project in order to assist them with their project replication.

Colorado Springs Senior Center, Center Director, 1996–2001

I was a significant agent of change and growth for this 15-year old facility.  I focused on new marketing plans, business to business partnerships and staff performance and development.  Responsibilities included management of the budget, strategic planning, and project planning as it related to the overall operations of the City of Colorado Springs. The Center offered more than 70 programs per week and served approximately 100,000 people each year.  Many of the programs were made possible through community and business partnerships and the dedication and supervision of over 300 volunteers.  Named “Employee of the Year,” 1999.

KTSC-TV, Southern Colorado PBS, Freelance Producer, 1995-1999

In Colorado, I chaired the regional conference and served as a delegate to the 1995 White House conference on Aging.  Frequently, someone would testify that seniors receive most of their information through television.  In response, I negotiated a television series with PBS to broadcast a live, call-in program, ‘Senior LIVE!’  I secured sponsors, panelists, show hosts and wrote and produced the program for 5 years.  Topics ranged from consumer issues to interpersonal development.  The show reached over 90,000 homes and educated countless older adults and their families.

Pikes Peak Community College, Extended Studies Coordinator, 1990-1995

In this diverse position I provided solutions and support to students pursuing their education through technology including telecourses, online learning and closed cable broadcast.  I identified educational program gaps for younger and older students.  Key successes included the creation of College for Kids, a winter break program that partnered the College with a local middle school and the Westside Youth Energy Program, a job-training program that created teams of middle school students with adult leaders to conduct energy audits in low-income neighborhoods. Youth were trained to caulk windows, apply water heater blankets and write reports for their clients.  For older learners, I scheduled college classes at community centers and developed an off-site Elderhostel program that brought learners from all over the Country to Colorado Springs for a weeklong enrichment learning experience.  Evaluations were 98% positive for all programs under my direction and I was awarded “Community All Star” for three consecutive years.
